• News Release: Final District Heights Elementary Air Quality Results Released

    UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Final results of indoor air quality tests at District Heights Elementary School have been released in a report issued by Elkridge-based Tidewater, Inc., an independent vendor for the school district.

    The company initially established baseline measurements March 30 and March 31 in two offices, six classrooms, media room and storage room. Those results showed all but one classroom with mold spore counts below their outdoor comparison samples. The classroom with marginally elevated mold spore counts was relocated as a precaution.


    After making a series of repairs and adjustments to improve air quality, PGCPS ordered the entire building tested on April 5, 7, and 10. PGCPS requested an additional test on April 11 after seeing evidence of water infiltration in room M-18 and M-22. The main office, storage rooms, all classrooms, and other common areas in the building were visually inspected and Comfort Parameter Air Testing, Particulate Sampling for Total (nuisance) Dust, and Spore Trap Bioaerosol Sampling were conducted.

    Results from the tests conclude the following:

    • Tidewater did not detect CO in all indoor locations assessed.

    • Results from a dust analysis were also found to be below federal guidelines.

    • Total spore trap results do not indicate the presence of a significant indoor source of fungal contamination that would adversely affect indoor air quality within the assessed areas of the building.

    The results included two recommendations which PGCPS has accepted and completed:

    • Clean the bathroom ceiling in classroom M-22 with kitchen/bathroom sanitizing solution to remove the dark spots observed on the ceiling. If staining of the surface remains, the area should be repainted with a fungal-resistant paint. Also, ensure proper bathroom exhaust operation to help reduce humidity and the resulting condensation in the room.  

    • Adjust the HVAC system in Classroom 5 to provide adequate conditioned air for the anticipated occupancy of the area. This will help lower the overall CO2 levels to a standard below 700 ppm above the background levels.

    PGCPS will conduct additional air quality tests for the remainder of the year to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.
