  • News Release: PGCPS Launches New Community Service Initiative

    UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Starting this holiday season, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will invite students, families and schools to collectively serve the community through Giving Together, a new system-wide campaign.

    Giving Together will focus on specific community needs through coordinated service activities, such as donation drives and fundraisers. Giving Together will work to mobilize 209 schools and centers, nearly 130,000 students, and more than 19,000 employees to help communities in need. The November and December launch activities will support the Capital Area Food Bank and United Way of the National Capital Area.

    “Service begins at home, right here in the neighborhoods that support our schools,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer. “I am excited about giving back through Giving Together. This is an opportunity to show our communities how much we care.”

    Each month, PGCPS will highlight an area of need that impacts students, families and the greater Prince George’s County community. The launch activities include:

    • #FillTheBowl (Nov. 16-Dec. 16): PGCPS will lead fundraising efforts for the Capital Area Food Bank through the #FillTheBowl challenge, asking employees to purchase a $25 bowl in support of ending hunger. Each purchase helps the Capital Area Food Bank provide 62 meals to those most in need.  

    • United WayGiving Campaign (Nov. 21-Dec. 19): Employees will pledge to make donations to their preferred charities through the United Way.

    • Stuff-A-Bus (December):  Students, staff and community members will stuff a school bus with nonperishable food items for the Capital Area Food Bank.

    • Coats-for-Teens (December): Donations of new winter coats will support the PGCPS Homeless Education Office.
