Eleanor Roosevelt HS Senior Named National Merit Scholar

Charles D. Dawson, senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, was selected as a 2018 National Merit Scholar. Dawson was among more than 1.6 million juniors nationwide who entered the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which serves as an initial screening of program entrants.

Eleanor Roosevelt students Ezra Cho and Elizabeth A. Gardner were National Merit Scholar semifinalists.

Caring Community: Frederick Douglass HS Students Make Prom Possible for Classmate

After learning that one of their classmates thought it might be be difficult to attend her senior prom, Frederick Douglass High School seniors Asya Bridgett, McKenzy Fields and Jailyn Ponzo put a plan into action to raise money to provide everything their classmate, Jennifer Rivera, would need.

Parents, classmates, family members and staff all pitched in to purchase Jennifer's dream dress and raised money to cover the cost of shoes, hairstyling, makeup and manicure.

Graduate Spotlight: Destiny Allen, Friendly High School

Behavioral issues, family problems and trying to fit in meant a rocky start to high school for Friendly High School senior Destiny Allen. It wasn’t until her grades hit rock bottom during tenth grade that she realized she had to make a change.

Today, Destiny is preparing to graduate as a 4.0 student, president of her school’s newspaper and volunteer with Friendly High’s CRI program for special education students. She will continue her education at Clark Atlanta University on a band scholarship to study education. Her goal: to work as a special education teacher, specializing in autism and Down syndrome, and to ultimately open up a post-secondary special needs school of her own.
