Board Policy 6180.1 - Evaluation and Selection of Classroom Instructional Materials

EVALUATION OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

The Public School Laws for the State of Maryland prescribe the adoption and purchase of classroom instructional materials. These classroom instructional materials must be furnished free of cost for use in the public schools of the State.

Complying with the Public School Laws, the Board of Education realizes the need to properly select classroom instructional materials which implement and support the Instructional Programs of the Prince George’s County Public Schools.

The Board of Education of Prince George’s County, after careful deliberation and due concern for its obligation to the students, does hereby charge the Superintendent to develop and implement guidelines for the evaluation, selection, and review process of instructional materials for, and in use in the schools of Prince George’s County; and that such guidelines provide for lay citizen involvement in the evaluation and selection process by people in the community who are not members of the school system staff. Such lay citizen participation to represent no less than 25% of the evaluation/selection group and that such lay citizen participants not serve more than three years so long as other qualified individuals are available and willing to serve, and that an alternate lay member be selected to serve in the absence of the assigned lay member, and that such lay citizen participants and alternates be selected by the Superintendent with the advice and consent of the Board of Education.
