    • There will be no work-study transportation. (Those students should not report to school.)
    • There will be no half-day Early Childhood Center (ECC), half-day Special Education Programs, or half-day PreK.
    • Any other school program requiring transportation prior to noon will NOT have transportation, including Howard B. Owens Science Center.
    • All field trips will be cancelled.

    The Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students provides instructional support and services to eligible students with hearing disabilities, birth through age 21.  The staff works collaboratively with school personnel to provide program planning, accommodations, modifications and curriculum adaptations, including small group instruction, for deaf and hard of hearing students in the least restrictive environment.

    Two communication methods, auditory/oral and Total Communication are offered from infancy through high school, with an emphasis on language acquisition in both methodologies. When small group instruction is needed, students using the Total Communication approach are taught via specialized instructional methods in order to access the content of the curriculum. These methods include highly structured teaching with increased emphasis on language development, reading and writing through the use of auditory skills with amplification, lip-reading, visual aids and sign language. Program sites include: Kingsford ES (Parent-Infant Program), Andrew Jackson Academy (K-8th Grade Program), Friendly HS, and Eleanor Roosevelt HS.

    For many students with a hearing loss, the least restrictive environment is the neighborhood school. Students in their neighborhood schools receive services by an itinerant teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. Services include, but are not limited to, supplemental aids and services, consultative services with school team, and direct services for students needing to develop self-advocacy skills and learn to use/maintain their equipment.

    To determine if a student is eligible for services through the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, the school IEP team follows the Special Education referral process. Parents must submit a copy of a current Audiological Report for review by the PGCPS audiologist. A hearing itinerant teacher and PGCPS audiologist must be present at the IEPT meeting to discuss the report and determine eligibility.
