For the third consecutive year, PGCPS has been recognized as one of the top 10% of U.S. school districts for whole-child education! Check out five ways the district fosters academic, social, emotional, physical, and ethical development to help students become well-rounded, responsible individuals.

1. Prioritizing Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

PGCPS places a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning, recognizing its importance for both students and educators! Partnerships with the University of Maryland, College Park, Mt. Holyoke College, St. Elizabeth University, and the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) provide continuous SEL training for teachers and leaders. View SEL Resources

2. Developing Life Skills

Through the elementary and middle school health curriculum, students learn life skills, anti-drug norms and personal self-management skills. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) strategies are employed to teach character education and improve behavior. Additionally, the district uses restorative approaches to create positive and equitable learning environments, fostering a sense of community and responsibility.

3. Maximizing Health and Wellness

Over the past three years, PGCPS has made significant strides in enhancing student health and wellness. Every school now has a mental health clinician who provides early interventions, emotional support, and crisis management. Partnerships with the Prince George’s County Health Department and Hazel Health offer students access to quality healthcare services, including physical and mental telehealth services, at no cost to families.

4. Providing Student Support Systems

Comprehensive support systems are essential for student success, and PGCPS ensures these are in place. The presence of mental health clinicians in schools is critical, as they offer vital early interventions, emotional support, and crisis management. These professionals help students navigate their challenges effectively, contributing to their overall well-being and academic success.

5. Focus on Financial Literacy

Through Financial Literacy education, students learn about and can earn certifications in banking, credit, insurance, paychecks, taxes, and budgeting. In 2023 and 2024 combined, more than 5,000 students achieved these certifications, demonstrating proficiency in managing real-world financial challenges! Students in the PGCPS Class of 2024 were the first to graduate with a personal finance course, which became a graduation requirement in 2020.
