See the Results of the 2024 Climate & Culture Survey!
We want to thank all the students, parents, and staff for participating in the recent PGCPS Climate Survey. Over 59,000 of you responded to the survey, showing dedication to improving our schools. The survey showed us areas where we are doing well and where we need to make improvements:
Where We're Doing Well
- Feeling Welcome: 88% of students in grades 4-5 agree they feel welcome at school. This positive feeling of belonging is crucial for student success and overall well-being.
- Culturally Responsive Instruction: 92% of instructional staff reported confidence in delivering culturally responsive instruction. PGCPS teachers are working hard to ensure all students feel seen and valued in the classroom.
- Family Engagement: 75% of families reported participation in school activities and events. Several families reported being actively involved in their child's education, a key factor in student success.
Where We Can Improve
- Student Safety: Only 41% of grades 6-12 students said they feel safe at school. Ensuring the safety of all students is our top priority. We’re taking immediate steps to better understand and address bullying and to create school environments where every student feels safe and supported.
- School Buildings: Many students think their school buildings need improvements. Only 38% of students in grades 6-12 and 52% in grades 4-5 said their school is clean and well-maintained. We're committed to improving the condition of our school buildings to create a more comfortable and welcoming learning environment.
- Mental Health: While many students know about mental health support at school, only about a quarter use it. We want to make sure all students understand what supports are available and that they have access to the support they need.
What We're Going To Do
- Make our schools safer: We're addressing bullying and ensuring all students feel safe and supported. This year, we updated our Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook, and we'll be rolling out Creating Welcoming Schools and Anti-Bullying training for school staff districtwide.
- Improve our school buildings: We're committed to improving the condition of our school buildings to create a more comfortable and welcoming learning environment. We'll continue our capital improvement projects districtwide, advocate for additional building funds, and launch districtwide student lessons on maintaining clean environments.
- Support student well-being: We're working to ensure all students and families know about the mental health supports available in PGCPS, including how to access school-based clinicians and enroll in the Hazel Telehealth program.
- Strengthen our engagement and communication with families: We'll work with schools to create more opportunities for families to voice feedback and concerns.
