Upon graduating from Virginia Union University and working in public relations and ministry, Walter Washington, IV wanted to switch careers. He began his journey with PGCPS as a dedicated aid on Lamont Elementary School’s special education team.
After eight months in the role, Washington was promoted to an itinerant special education assistant, during which he gained a better understanding of curriculum, IEPs and daily functions of the classroom. Five years later he was promoted to a paraprofessional, including serving as a substitute teacher. This fall, he began his first year as a classroom teacher!
“Principal Massa McClain encouraged me to keep going, continue to grow and not to become complacent,” Washington said. “She reminded me of the impact that I have on students. I’m so grateful for PGCPS developing me and for Principal McClain, who guided me and ensured I kept growing.”
