UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students and families have their final chance to get immunized for free at clinics throughout the county this weekend.
Students who do not receive state-mandated immunizations will not be allowed to start school on the first day, August 23. The final free immunization clinics will be held August 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Shops at Iverson in Temple Hills, Beltway Plaza in Greenbelt, and the Mall at Prince Georges at Hyattsville. The Prince George’s County Health Department’s Cheverly Health Center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 30 and this Saturday, August 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Health insurance is not required and parents should bring their child’s shot record to the clinic.
“We urge families to check their child’s immunization records as soon as possible and obtain the immunizations they need to begin school,” said Dr. Adrian Talley, Student Services executive director. “Though our ‘no shots, no school’ policy is firm, we want all students to be in school from the first day, excited to begin another year of learning and growing.”
PGCPS officials initially contacted parents of students who need immunizations last December regarding their status and the new immunization policy. Letters were sent to students’ health care providers as well. PGCPS has hosted free immunization clinics since July in partnership with the county Health Department, Maryland Partnership for Prevention and Kaiser Permanente.
