UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Edward Burroughs III will serve as Vice Chair of the Prince George’s County Board of Education.
County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks accepted the Board’s recommendation in a letter on Thursday confirming his appointment. Burroughs, who represents District 8, will serve alongside Board Chair Dr. Alvin Thornton, who was appointed in December by the County Executive.
Burroughs made history in 2010 with his election to the Board, which made him the youngest elected official in Maryland at that time. He is the longest-serving member on the Board, which currently includes one student and two appointed members.
“I am thankful and excited to have received this vote of confidence. It has been an honor to serve on our board for over a decade and I am more hopeful now than ever before,” said Burroughs. “Our County Executive, Board of Education and Interim Chief Executive Officer are all working together to move our system forward. Education is the civil rights issue of our time and we are prepared to fulfill our obligation to this generation.”
A three-term elected Board Member, Burroughs was a two-term Student Member of the Board at Crossland High School from 2008 to 2010. A co-founder and chairman of the Board’s Accountability and Solutions Caucus, Burroughs has also served on the Disability Issues Advisory Board and Superintendent’s Advisory Council.
Burroughs holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He works professionally as coordinator of a juvenile diversion program in the State’s Attorney’s Office.
His four-year term expires in 2020.
