Enrollment up for fifth consecutive year
UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will welcome more than 134,000 students back to school Sept. 4 with new programs, opportunities and leadership for the 2018-19 school year.
Interim Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Goldson will begin the day greeting school bus drivers with U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen before touring schools throughout the county. They will ride a school bus to newly-renovated Tulip Grove Elementary, home to 2018 Teacher of the Year Daleisha Myers, and tour the school.
Dr. Goldson will then visit Student Member of the Board Amanya Paige and Maryland State Board of Education Member Bryce Awono at Parkdale High School.
She will be joined by County Executive Rushern L. Baker III at G. James Gholson Middle School and for lunch at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, where she was founding principal.
In addition to Tulip Grove, the year’s highlights include the new “Here Comes the Bus” app, which provides families with school bus location and estimated time of arrival, and the Youth Apprenticeship Program launch. Connected to high school career academies, the apprenticeship program is designed to provide students with real-world experience in carpentry, plumbing and other fields. Planning will also begin this year for the community schools initiative, which will build on the County’s Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative currently supporting over 40 schools, including G. James Gholson Middle School.
Projected enrollment for this school year is 134,466, up from 132,363 in 2017.
