UPPER MARLBORO, MD — Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is set to host its first Pride summit on Saturday, May 4.

More than 250 students, staff and community members are registered to attend the summit featuring a diverse range of sessions for students, staff, allies and families, including workshops on topics such as resources to support LGBTQIA+ youth, strategies for empowerment and advocacy, and fostering inclusivity and allyship within the PGCPS community.

“Every member of our community deserves to feel seen, valued, respected and safe, and this summit represents a milestone in our ongoing work to foster a culture of acceptance and equity across the district,” said Superintendent Millard House II.

The inaugural summit is part of ongoing district wide efforts to create an inclusive and equitable educational environment for all — and that it will set the groundwork for a continued celebration throughout June for Pride Month.

Office of Student Engagement and School Support leader Richard Moody, one of the summit organizers, highlighted the integral role of students in the event's planning.

"Students have been instrumental in the planning of this event, and their voices and advocacy have driven us forward,” Moody said. “This summit is something they have passionately called for, and it's an honor to see it come to life as a testament to their vision and leadership."

Summit workshops for students will include practical guidance on starting Gender Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) at their schools, understanding their rights, accessing local resources and services, mental health and more.

For staff and families, sessions will focus on providing support to LGBTQIA+ children, highlighting PGCPS-specific resources for LGBTQIA+ students, and learning about programs aimed at promoting inclusivity within educational environments.

The PRIDE in PGCPS virtual summit will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4. Registration is open through Thursday, May 2.
