Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Background Unit Supervisor, the Background Unit Investigator is responsible for the review and investigation of all employee records pertaining to the criminal background investigation for employment.  This position is also responsible for the review of the background investigations pertaining to vendors, volunteers and chaperones, and supporting identification badge processing.  The position requires familiarity with PGCPS security procedures, process related to employee and volunteer fingerprinting, and on-boarding procedures for new employees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews background investigation responses; including notices of arrests and expungements, letters and reprints from the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), or similar platform, Child Protective Services clearance, etc.;
  • Makes recommendations regarding employment, vendor, chaperone and volunteer actions based on information received through the criminal background investigation process;
  • Notifies employment teams and other appropriate management individuals of information received through the criminal background process and Child Protective Services clearance; this includes information that arises after employment or start of activity with PGCPS;
  • Assists employment teams, labor relations office and other appropriate individuals with follow-up investigations, as requested;
  • Ensures that employees or persons subject to background checks fully complete the release and authorization forms;
  • Reviews and interprets court documents and papers obtained by leaders/specialists or through visits to courts, police departments, etc.;
  • Processes daily mail from CJIS including the retrieval of electronic information and follows through with any corrections that are needed;
  • Works collaboratively with the Human Resources Operations and Staffing department;
  • Scans and stores background responses for retrieval;
  • Supports the identification badge request process;
  • Supports the monitoring of purchasing needs associated with consumable stock (e.g., forms, identification badges), and maintenance of any paid services;
  • Adheres to standard operating procedures for, but not limited to, scanning and storing background responses for retrieval, processing identification badge requests, and Child Protective Services clearance;
  • Performs duties with operational excellence and customer experience as a driving focus; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must have exceptional organizational skills;

  • Must work proactively and collaboratively in partnerships with clients and staff at all levels in the system to achieve a common or necessary objective;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Must be skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and skilled using the internet for work-related research;
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in order to move toward the completion of goals; and
  • Ability to deliver effective customer experience and take appropriate and immediate action with a primary focus in meeting the customer’s needs and concerns.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with a significant emphasis on Criminal Justice related coursework; or (5) years of work related experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Additional Information:

Highly demanding and fast-paced environment; frequently required to work long hours and weekends. Annual leave may be limited during specified timeframes. Local and non-local travel may be required.
