Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent of Supporting Services, the Director of Food and Nutrition Services will have the overall responsibility for the administration of all food and nutrition programs and services for Prince George’s County Public Schools. The incumbent in this class is responsible for initiating and developing the overall objectives for the assigned department. Responsibilities include assessing the needs of the department, developing an operational framework for the department, developing a budget based on analysis of needs, and implementing the processes and procedures for evaluating programs and personnel in the department. Special assignments are received through conferences, written instructions and requests from the Associate Superintendent Supporting Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs all activities relating to the various food and nutrition programs and services for the school system;
  • Oversees the procurement processes for food, equipment and supplies, and works with the Director of Purchasing and Supply to execute Requests for Bids and securing vendors under contract for all purchases;
  • Oversees accounting procedures to ensure proper control and management of the food and nutrition programs and services; enforces financial reporting as established by USDA and MSDE;
  • Prepares and maintains the department’s budget; reviews program operations for cost effectiveness;
  • Maintains operational supervision of the activities of school-based food services employees; establishes personnel management standards for food service operations;
  • Verifies specifications for the food service areas of all major school renovations and construction projects for compliance with all county Health Department program requirements;
  • Develops and recommends changes in policies and procedures related to the department;
  • Prepares and conducts staff meetings; recommends staff development activities;
  • Evaluates and makes recommendation on appropriate personnel actions such as hires, transfers and terminations of employees;
  • Coordinates with schools, central offices and the community to advance the services and programs provided; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of food service management;
  • Knowledge of USDA food and nutrition regulations, state law and codes pertaining to food services;
  • Knowledge of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) programs;
  • Ability to meet annual continuing education and/or training requirements;
  • Demonstrated managerial and leadership skills;
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite and Google applications;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and provide alternative solutions to problems;
  • Familiarity and competence in the development and use of sophisticated data processing support of operating programs;
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and administration, dietetics, food quality and sanitation regulations, and community nutritional needs;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, and human relation skills; and
  • Ability to speak Spanish, preferred.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in food and nutrition, dietetics, family and consumer science, nutrition education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.   A minimum of five (5) years of successful work experience with three (3) years of supervisory experience in food and nutrition services.

Certification:

ServSafe Food Manager Certification required; Registered Dietitian and/or certified School Nutrition Specialist preferred. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Additional Information:

Driver’s License is required inasmuch as there will be a need to travel to sites throughout the school district.
