The Instructional Specialist – World Languages Elementary Languages is responsible for assisting elementary school teachers with appropriate methodology, current teaching strategies, and content infusion. The position is assigned to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, working directly under the Coordinating Supervisor of World Languages. The primary focus of this position is to provide resource assistance to the school system through the World Languages Office.
Observe, monitor, and assist in World Languages’ classroom instruction, including providing FFT Observations;
Provide appropriate strategies to new and tenured teachers of all eleven languages;
Planning and implementing on-going staff development based on assessed needs of World Language teachers;
Help monitor World Language and ICAL programs in elementary schools;
Create, develop, and assist with World Language curriculum documents;
Assist with enrollment study and other analyses of World Languages’ data;
Planning and conducting in-service programs for World Languages’ teachers focusing on effective instructional strategies;
Observing and assisting World Languages’ teachers with classroom instruction, organizing, and management;
Engaging in collaborative planning with other disciplines in support of the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and PARCC;
Compile information for yearly “Approved List of World Languages’ Classroom Instructional Materials Catalog”;
Providing demonstration lessons for teachers; and
Attending meetings and performing other duties as requested by the Supervisor of World Languages, Coordinating Supervisor for Curriculum and Instruction, and/or the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Minimum of Five (5) years of successful teaching in a World Languages’ course(s);
Extensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills;
Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex operations and activities in multiple settings;
Ability to work with diverse populations;
Demonstrated expertise in the range of issues and programs relevant to World Languages and or related fields;
Experience in the design and/or implementation of innovative techniques in World Languages and/or related fields;
Demonstrates knowledge of effective teaching techniques and strategies; and
Evidence of good human relations and social skills.
Master’s Degree in Arts of Humanities, Modern Language, Curriculum and Instruction or Administration.
Holds or is eligible for an Advanced Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education; Administrator I Certification required.
