Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Risk Management, the Workers Compensation Technician performs diverse and complex administrative duties to support the workers’ compensation function within Risk Management. The incumbent of this position is responsible for mapping the status and progress of employees losing time from work over 90 days related to workers’ compensation and assault leave claims. The Workers Compensation Technician is responsible for collaborating with the third-party administrator and internal departments to facilitate employees’ return to work and tracking employee work status while within the workers’ compensation and/or assault leave program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and carries out systems to monitor, maintain, process and ensure the accuracy of lost time benefits to injured workers receiving benefits outside or beyond 90 days;
  • Verifies time reported and contacts work locations to resolve any questions concerning employee’s return to work after disability leave exhaustion or ineligibility;
  • Updates, tracks and maintains employees’ leave of absence and return to work as it relates to workers’ compensation and assault leave; ensures appropriate status updates in Oracle and any other applicable databases;
  • Answers frequent walk-in, email and telephone requests from employees regarding payroll and leave questions;
  • Oversees data gathering and prepares complex reports by compiling summaries of lost time and other benefits;
  • Communicates with employees, leave granting authorities, the third-party administrator and all related stakeholders;
  • Liaisons and coordinates between Risk Management and the third-party administrator’s adjusting team, along with other PGCPS site locations and departments;
  • Researches records to supply or support approved lost time benefits;
  • Identifies and refers cases in the Employee Incident Tracking System (EITS) to appropriate staff for review; reviews and refers cases to Equity Assurance as needed;
  • Serves as a representative during Workers’ Compensation Commission proceedings;
  • Reviews legal findings to ascertain appropriate direction for Risk Management and outside stakeholders;
  • Provides appropriate stakeholders with status reports related to work status and other variables and provides notification of any issues that may require intervention;
  • Attends meetings and provides/presents data and status updates;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information and prepares reports using such information as needed;
  • Responds to inquiries and develops correspondence on behalf of the department; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Maryland Workers’ Compensation laws, processes and procedures;
  • Knowledge PGCPS policies, procedures and negotiated agreements;
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite;
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Oracle and/or other payroll software and databases;
  • Familiar with absence management processes to include various leaves of absences;
  • Experience working in customer service;
  • Excellent human relations skills, as well as oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately perform data entry and analysis;
  • Ability to work independently in a time-sensitive environment and make sound decisions;
  • Ability to collaborate with others and be an effective team player;
  • Ability to work in a high volume and fast-paced work environment; prioritize multiple tasks, and meet set deadlines; and
  • Ability to treat information and records confidentially.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

High school graduate required; Associate’s degree preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a workers’ compensation, payroll, benefits, absence management or human resources environment required.

Certification:

None required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
