Middle School Band Supply List

This page describes what supplies are needed for each instrument. Please make sure that you locate the instrument you are playing in order to get the correct supplies. Items listed are to be purchased at an instrumental music store.

All Students Need:

Folder
Pencil
Tuner (Displays if notes are played in tune) All middle school level musicians should have a tuner if possible.
- I would prefer that band students get the box-shaped Korg tuners and get a clip-on pick-up wire.
Metronome (Creates audible tone or click to keep the beat)
Folding Stand to practice music with good posture at home.

Method Book

6th & 7th Grade Band
- Measures of Success, Book 1, For Your Instrument (7th will move up to Book 2 As soon as possible).
8th Grade Band
- Measures of Success, Book 2, (Orange) For Your Instrument

Wind Instrument Supplies

Flute
- Cleaning rod, & handkerchief.
Oboe
- Small water container, silk swab, Reeds (Purple) can be ordered from this link or at your local music store.
Clarinet (Bb or Bass), Saxophone (Alto/Tenor)
- case of strength #3 reeds, reed cases, cork grease, cleaning swab and neckstrap (sax only).
Horn, Trumpet/Cornet, Baritone Horn, Tuba
- valve oil, mouthpiece, and soft cloth.
Trombone
- mouthpiece, trombotine or Slide-O-Mix, small water spray bottle, and a soft cloth.

Percussion Instrument Supplies

All percussion students must have the following:

Bell Mallets
Vic Firth M142 or Vater MV-M42 or Similar Hard Plastic Heads
Xylophone Mallets
Vic Firth M133 or Vater MV-M42 or Similar Hard Rubber Heads
Snare Sticks – one pair
SD1 General or SD1 Junior (for small hands) OR
Vic Firth 3A
Timpani Mallets - 8th grade only
T1 General (Vic Firth) or VMT3(Vater)
Percussion Stick Bag (with name visible) - Used to hold and transport each percussionist's sticks/mallets. Hand carrying or plastic bags are not allowed
Practice pad or Snare drum - At home to practice with.
Bell Set (glockenspiel) - At home to practice with.
Metronome
Device used to set the beat. Useful in home practice

If you lose or break a pair of sticks, you are still responsible and expected to be prepared. You should either have an extra pair (especially snare) or be prepared to purchase more before the next band class. Every wind player is expected to have their instrument each band day, and every percussionist should have their sticks!

Middle School Orchestra Supply List

Please remember that string instruments are made in different sizes. Before renting or purchasing an instrument be sure to have your student measured.

Text for 6th & 7th Graders:

They will complete their books from last year, String Basics Book 1 (red, not pictured) and then move to Book 2
String Basics Book 2 (Blue) For Your Chosen Instrument (pictured is the violin book)

Text for 8th Graders:

They will finish their book from last year, shown above, String Basics Book 2 and then move to Book 3
String Basics Book 3 (Green) For Your Chosen Instrument (pictured is the cello book)

Instrument Supplies

Violin and Viola
- Rosin, shoulder rest, soft cloth.
Cello and String Bass
- Rock stop, cello or bass rosin, soft cloth.
