Car Rider Drop Off & Pick Up

Please review the Car Rider Procedures below and view the map to help you understand the flow of traffic.  Map of Car Rider Line

If you are new to GWES and are planning to be a car rider, please email Amanda.Soto@pgcps.org to request a car rider tag.  Car rider tags must be visible at pick up and are not needed at drop off in the morning.

Car Rider Procedures

The safety of our students during arrival and dismissal is of utmost importance.  In an effort to maintain a safe arrival and dismissal process, the following procedures will be implemented for morning drop off and afternoon pick up during the school year.  If your child will arrive at school by car and/or go home in a car every day, please review the procedures below.

Definitions

Car Rider: A car rider is a student who is dropped off in the car loop each morning and/or is picked up from the car loop in a car every day. GWES facilitates point to point drop off and pick up for car riders via the established car loop.

Walker: A student whose parent parks their car every day, and walks to the school door to pick up their child.

Morning Drop Off

  • Cars are to drive to the gym/cafeteria side of the school building.
  • Cars are to loop around the full length of the playground and line up along the cones.
  • Cars are to pull to the end of the car rider loop to the far end.
  • Students may exit cars in the cone area. Please do not drop off students on the playground or around the black gates.
  • Students may enter the building through the gym door beginning at 8:45 AM. Students may not be dropped off prior to 8:45 a.m.
  • Drivers are to remain in their cars.  No drivers are to get out of their cars.
  • Be sure students have their bookbag, lunchboxes, water bottles, etc. While you wait in the line, have your car unlocked and students can start to unbuckle to make getting out faster.

Afternoon Pick Up

  • Students that go home in a car every day are considered “car riders.”  The car rider loop is established for all parents/guardians that will pick up children in a car every day from school.
  • Car Rider Tags can be obtained by emailing Mrs. Soto (amanda.soto@pgcps.org).  You will keep this number throughout your time at GWES.
  • Each driver must display the GWES Car Rider Tag so that it is visible. Your child’s number will be called in the order in which you arrive.
  • Please do not text your student to tell them to come to your car when you arrive. This is creating a safety issue for children. We will dismiss them in the order you are in the car line.
  • Car riders will report to the gym and will be dismissed based on the order of the cars in the car loop.
  • In the car loop, drivers must stay in their cars in order to keep children safe.
  • Drivers pull to the far end of the car loop.
  • Students are loaded into cars between the cones.

Thank you so much for your cooperation in keeping our children safe! We greatly appreciate it!

The Transportation office will be sending information out closer to the start of the school year.  If you do not receive a letter, contact them at 301-952-6570.
