With a lineup of high-profile leaders, including Maryland Senator Nick Charles, former NFL player Kyle Arrington, and nationally-acclaimed author and psychotherapist Paul Bashea Williams, the inaugural "Men Make a Difference: The Power of Presence" (POPs) Conference marked a milestone in empowering fathers and father-like figures in Prince George’s County.

“The presence of so many of our fathers at this event signifies their commitment to take the steps necessary to enhance their presence in the lives of our students,” said Superintendent Millard House II. “I am grateful for their presence and support and I am looking forward to their continued partnership this school year.”

Designed to equip fathers with essential tools to support their children’s academic journeys, the conference offered a series of engaging workshops focused on vital topics such as parent advocacy, academic success and mental health support.

The event featured a dynamic panel discussion and an awards showcase, honoring remarkable leaders in education who have made significant contributions to the community.

Among featured speakers were educator Marvin Burton and pastor and inspirational speaker Randall Pike, both who inspired attendees with powerful messages about the importance of mentorship, community support, family and self preservation.

“I charge and challenge the males present here today to do your due diligence to try your best to keep your families together,” Burton said. “To me that’s what presence is. The different families we have, the different ways they may be arranged, keep them together.”

Panelists also encouraged attendees to prioritize self-care and fitness strategies, to help ensure that they can remain present for their families in the years to come.

“Do things now that will protect the five-year later version of yourself,” said Pike. “You want to start putting practices into place now to ensure your overall health and well-being in every aspect of your lives.”

Adding to the day’s excitement was a “Cars and Coffee” event, where attendees enjoyed a showcase of exotic, classic and electric vehicles.
