With influenza cases on the rise nationwide, including an uptick in Prince George’s County and some schools, PGCPS is prioritizing efforts to minimize the spread and keep students and staff healthy.
In schools, we have intensified cleaning and disinfecting protocols in all buildings and buses, with a focus on high-touch surfaces. Custodial staff have also increased the frequency of deep cleaning in classrooms, restrooms and common areas to minimize the spread of germs.
Additionally, we are closely monitoring flu-related absences and working with local health officials to monitor flu trends and respond appropriately.
In schools with a significant number of flu cases, temporary masking may be suggested until the situation improves to help limit transmission.
Tips to Reduce the Spread of Flu
Stay Home When Sick – If your child has flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, and body aches, they should stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication. Also: if your child is out with flu, be sure to report it to your school to help us track and monitor!
Consider Vaccination – The flu shot remains the best defense against severe illness.
Practice Good Hand Hygiene – Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when soap is unavailable.
Cover Coughs & Sneezes – Use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes. Dispose of tissues properly and wash hands afterward.
