When twins Imrane and Mounira Oumarou Ba moved to Prince George’s County from Niger, Africa at 12 years old they spoke little English. But upon beginning sixth grade at Greenbelt Middle School and finishing at G. James Gholson, it was clear that the language barrier would be no obstacle to academic success!
With the foundation of parents who prioritized education and early support from the ESOL program, today Imrane and Mounira are graduating at the top of their class at Central High School — valedictorian and salutatorian respectively. They will continue their journey together at Louisiana State University on nearly full scholarships. Imrane Ba plans to study sports management or architecture while sister Mounira will pursue international relations or political science.
