The Ellen Ochoa Middle School Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, held on November 7, 2024, was a moment of pride and inspiration for the entire PGCPS community. Named after Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina astronaut to go to space and the former Director of NASA's Johnson Space Center, the event marked the official opening of a state-of-the-art school that symbolizes innovation and opportunity.
The school, located in the heart of Glenridge Community Park, is a testament to forward-thinking design and environmental sustainability. Built to serve up to 1,200 students, Ellen Ochoa Middle School features cutting-edge and innovative spaces, including high-quality science classrooms, a STEAM lab, music studios, a gymnasium, outdoor learning spaces, and a central commons area. Every element of the school was designed to inspire creativity, foster collaboration, and support academic excellence, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings. The building also reflects PGCPS’ commitment to sustainability and environmental literacy. The facility boasts geothermal heating and cooling, 65,000 square feet of solar panels, and stormwater management systems. These environmentally friendly features highlight the school's alignment with Net-Zero readiness and LEED Silver Certification standards.
The Ribbon Cutting ceremony was elevated by Dr. Ochoa's presence, which excited the school's students and staff. Guided by the school's principal, Dr. Dana Doggett, Dr. Ochoa toured the school, visited classrooms, and answered eager students' questions about her experiences in space. She also received handmade gifts from community members and took many photos with enthusiastic students and ribbon-cutting attendees. Seeing Dr. Ochoa in person inspired many young attendees to dream big and pursue their ambitions fearlessly.
Shawn Matlock, the Director of the PGCPS Office of Alternative Infrastructure and Planning Development, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new school. The event featured several speakers who emphasized the significance of this state-of-the-art educational facility. Principal Doggett warmly welcomed attendees, creating a celebratory atmosphere focused on collaboration and progress. Later in the ceremony, Dr. Ellen Ochoa delivered special remarks that captivated the audience. She shared insights from her remarkable career and presented the school with a signed montage. The importance of the school as a beacon of opportunity and community pride was underscored by contributions from key figures, including Millard House II, the Superintendent of PGCPS, and other local leaders.
